NTO’s Mission and Oakland’s Issues

Our elected officials are no longer accountable to us. Oakland politics have become dominated by outside special interests, like our local Public Sector Unions and unaccountable nonprofits, that no longer answer to the needs of working neighbors. Properly educated and organized, we can become the most powerful voting bloc in Oakland – so that when we vote in 2024, we are voting for neighbors that we know and trust.

City Hall has failed on the basics: Creating a safe and livable city. Neighbors want pragmatic solutions to the problems that we are currently facing, not the performatively altruistic politics that are currently ruining Oakland.

NTO believes in the power of neighbors. Oakland neighbors are caring, hardworking, artistic, educated and resourceful. It’s time to make our actions match our ambitions to create the city we all deserve to live in. NTO supports a local government that is responsibly managed, transparent, accountable to neighbors and most importantly, follows common sense.

Our Goals:

We have simple, but achievable goals.

Educate Neighbors

Better information leads to better decision making. It’s important that we all know the  policies and decisions that have led to our current state of decline so that we don’t repeat those same mistakes, or vote for the same people again.

Change through VOTING!

Voting matters! Many Oakland elections are decided by just a few percentage points.  With ranked choice voting still in place, it is even more vital that neighbors are properly informed.

Our strategy

From talking to thousands of neighbors, we know that most Oakland voters are unhappy with current policies, yet we keep electing the same politicians who are creating and implementing them. This happens because voters are deprived of consistent and reliable information and neighbors aren’t working together to give political courage to potential candidates.

Politics is a contact sport and people who have spoken out against the current leadership have been wrongfully attacked. Until we have a group of organized neighbors ready to mobilize, it will be difficult to find quality candidates who have the confidence or financial support to run.

NTO has a simple, yet effective strategy: educate, agitate, organize! We are bringing neighbors together with endeavors like our Lawn Sign Campaign, protests, informative neighborhood gatherings and more!

Our goal is to have Oakland’s neighbors organized and ready to work together to take our city back in the next election cycle!
